Canadian U16 National Soccer Championships - Edmonton, Alberta. October 3 - 8, 2001
ASRA Social

The Edmonton Society of the ASRA held a social event at Sherlock Holmes Pub on
the Saturday of the Nationals competition. Attendance was fantastic, with local
referees, some spouses, visiting referees and three assessors. Door prizes were
presented, and there was a raffle to raise funds to support the American Red
Cross September 11th Campaign. Prize was an Adidas ref shirt, donated by Wayne
Telfer's ref supply boutique, and was initially won by Derek Douglas. Derek declined
the prize, suggesting one of the active referees should benefit, and lo and behold,
the shirt was eventually won by President Stu Murray.

This was a good opportunity to share some stories from the games to date, spend
some time with the visiting referees and generally relax for a few hours.

'Best dressed' award went to John Hayes and his wife Marge, who were both
impeccably dressed in formal evening attire, on their way to another function.
John surprised us all by leaving before we could get his picture.

The assessors left early, but rumour has it they went to a coffee shop across
the street and made notes on what time everyone left!

All in all, a fun evening. Thanks to Stu Murray for arranging it all.

Odds and Ends
Derek Douglas - Enjoying the sun while assessing at Henry Singer fields.

Assessments were done at every game in the
competition. Kevin Jones, Hugh McFadzean, Vladimir
Bado and Derek Douglas all had the unenviable job of
helping referees and assistants sharpen up their skills.
Some officials got valuable assessments towards their
upgrading efforts, and everyone will look forward to
using the advice in their future games.

Only a select few of us know who has the whistle
that sounds like a 'sick canary'!

This group of officials proves that even with seven referees - five of them are missing a good game!

Souvenirs are a must at tournaments - pins, badges
pennants, the odd game ball...
However, one of our officials took home a nasty cut on
the top of his head, due to an accident in the washroom
at Victoria! Not a nice souvenir.

To preserve his dignity, he shall remain nameless here!
Only clue is - he didn't mess up his hair!
